The first four games of the 2011 NCAA basketball tournament have been full of excitement and have seen 3 of the 4 games decided at the buzzer.
The first game of the day featured the 12th seeded Clemson Tigers vs. the 5th seeded West Virginia Mountaineers. The Tigers advanced to face West Virginia after defeating UAB earlier in the week in the First Four.
Clemson looked good early, especially from 3-point range as they led most of the first half. The Tigers were playing their second game in 36 hours; however, and a fatigued Tigers team lost the lead in the second half and eventually the game, 84-76.
Darryl Bryant led the Mountaineers with 19 points. The Mountaineers went on a 28-8 run at the end of the first half and into the second half.
The 8 vs. 9 matchup in the Southeast Region pitted the defending national runner-up Butler vs. Old Dominion. The game was a tight contest with 21 lead changes throughout the game.
In the end, a Matt Howard tip in at the buzzer would send the Monarchs backing and Butler on to the next round.
The first upset of the tournament came in Denver as the Morehead State Eagles took down the Louisville Cardinals in a battle of teams from the Bluegrass state.
The Eagles were notted with the Cardinals at 33 at the half, but Morehead State turned it on from 3-point range in the second half. Louisville senior guard Preston Knowles left the game in the second half with an injury and the Eagles took advantage of Knowles abcence with an 11-2 run.
Demonte Harper made a 3-pointer to take a 1 point lead for the Eagles with just 4.2 seconds remaining. The Cardinals had a chance to win the game after the inbound pass but Mike Marra's game winning attempt was blocked by Morehead's Kenneth Fareid as time expired. The Eagles shot 45% from beyond the arc to defeat the Cardinals.
The fourth matchup of the day saw 10th seed Penn State face 7th seed Temple. Penn State led for much of the first half but Temple kept within striking range through the second half.
Temple held a 64-61 lead late in the second half when Penn State's Talor Battle sunk a 3-pointer with only 12.2 seconds to go. Temple sped down the court after the inbound pass and Juan Fernandez hit an 18 foot leaner as time expired to give the Owls a 66-64 victory.
Fernandez and Ramone Moore both put up 23 points for the Owls who will face the winner of the San Diego St vs. Northern Colorado which will take place later today.
Number 1 seed Pitt leads North Carolina- Asheville 30-25 at the half.
5th seeded Vanderbilt leads Richmond 12-7 with 13:19 remaining in the first half.
13th seed Princeton leads 4th seed Kentucky 44-41 with 10:45 remaining in the second half.
